Frequently Asked Questions About Pediatric Dentistry

When should a child start seeing the dentist?

Both the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend that a child’s first dental visit is around the age of 12 months, or within six months of the eruption of their first tooth (whichever comes first).

What happens during a child’s first dental appointment?

During your child’s first appointment, we will examine their teeth to ensure that they’re erupting properly and, if possible, perform a gentle cleaning. We’ll also talk to you about caring for your toddler’s teeth and dietary habits that promote strong teeth and good oral health.

How often should kids see the dentist?

Just like adults, children need to go to the dentist every six months for comprehensive evaluations and dental cleanings. This helps keep cavities at bay and makes going to the dentist a routine experience. When your child is familiar with our office and our team, they’re less likely to have dental anxiety.

Do you need to fill cavities in baby teeth?

Yes, in most cases, cavities in baby teeth do need to be treated. The exception to this is when a tooth is about to fall out anyway. If a cavity is left untreated, it can cause your child pain and compromise other teeth; if a baby tooth is pulled out as an alternative to filling a cavity, a space maintainer may be needed to prevent adjacent teeth from drifting into the gap and causing orthodontic issues.

Are dental sealants worth it?

Absolutely. If we recommend dental sealants for your child, they’ll benefit from the procedure. Dental sealants are simple, quick, and painless. According to the Centers for Disease Control, dental sealants prevent 80 percent of cavities for up to two years after being applied. Aside from good oral hygiene habits and regular dental visits, they’re one of the best tools we have to prevent tooth decay.

How often should I brush my child’s teeth?

It’s recommended that you brush your child’s teeth twice a day until they are old enough to manage the job on their own. We’ve found that what works best is a slow transition from parents to child—for the first few years, you’ll want to do the brushing yourself, then share brushing duties with your child during the preschool years, and after that, provide supervision to ensure that your child is brushing thoroughly for a full two minutes.
